WHAT THE HECK IS SOLID SHAMPOO? - AKA FAQs

Scrappy & Co is dedicated to providing gentle, skin friendly, nasty free, natural cleaning for dogs, while being environmentally friendly.
First things first.

Shampoo bars aren’t soap.

They may look like soap, as we’re all used to soap coming in bars, but they aren’t soap.

Soap’s cleaning ability comes from sodium hydroxide/lye which is super harsh on doggy hair and skin. (And human hair too!)

Instead our shampoo bars use a blend of naturally derived coconut based cleaners to gently and safely clean the stinkiest dog.

If you see a shampoo bar (human or doggy) containing sodium hydroxide/lye then this is not a shampoo bar but a bar of soap and should be avoided!

There also exist products, both doggy and human - which claim to be shampoo bars but actually have no cleaning agents.

A bar can be full of all kinds of lovely things, but if it doesn't have a cleanser in it then it won't actually be cleaning!

Why Solid Shampoo?

Solid shampoo is the environmentally conscious way to clean your dog’s fur. By removing the water that makes up a large part of shampoos we are able to reduce packaging and remove the need for plastic containers, which we all know aren’t great for the environment.

As a dog I think the environment is pretty important - I like running around in fields, chasing squirrels up trees, and even the odd trip to the seaside. So it seems sensible to me not to hurt the environment. Otherwise where will future doggies play??

Another bonus is that solid shampoos last lots longer as they are more concentrated that the diluted liquid versions. So you get more bang, or fox poo removal power, for your buck!

Plus they are easy to transport when travelling, or keep on hand for dirty dog emergencies, oh and you can’t spill them. The huMum says that trying to deal with a slippery, wiggly dog and a slippery shampoo bottle means lots of spillage!

FAQs
How often should I wash my dog?
Most dogs don't need washing super frequently, and we would recommend no more than once weekly.

How long will a shampoo bar last?
The bars are concentrated, but the amount of time they last does depend on the size of your dog, its fur type, and how often you wash them. Typically a mini bar should provide 3+ washes of a small/medium dog. We recommend that the bigger the dog, the larger the bar you choose.

What should I do when I have bits of bar left?
It is natural that as you use your bar it may break down into smaller pieces.

One tip to avoid this is to make sure you don't get it too wet. Just glide over your pooch's coat a few times and then put it aside.

As the bar is used up it may well break into smaller pieces, this is normal.

Our top tip is to warm these pieces up slightly, either by popping them in the microwave for a few seconds, or blasting them with a hairdryer, then when they have softened a little you can squish them back into a ball (or into an old ice cube tray) then pop into the fridge/freezer for a few minutes to harden up!

Why do the bars look different from batch to batch?
All our bars are produced in small batches by hand, so each bar is original and may look slightly different. We don't use industrial moulds,  so the shapes are irregular, and our colourings are 100% natural so will vary and fade over time.

My sensitive bar has bits in it,  is this normal?
Yes it is! The sensitive bar contains oatmeal which has been show to be highly soothing to stressed, sensitive skin. We use a mix of finely milled oatmeal, as well as some larger pieces - the idea behind this is that the larger flakes get wet and release a little of their soothing oat milk during use. The oat flakes will easily wash off or can be blown away by drying, or brushed out afterwards. They are entirely safe for your dog.

My dog has very sensitive skin - are your bars okay?
Our shampoo bars are made with exceptionally gentle cleansers. We have tested them on hundreds of dogs (and humans too) without any adverse effects.

But all pups are different - if your dog has very sensitive skin or is a puppy we would recommend using Sensitive Dog first, and maybe doing a little test patch of a small area and waiting to see if everything is hunky dory.

What about puppies?
We recommend that puppies under six months use Sensitive Dog - while all our bars use very gentle ingredients we prefer to err on the side of caution and not use essential oils on tiny pups,  just like you wouldn't on a tiny baby.

Do you use organic products?
Most but not all of the products we use are organic, we are looking to expand this as we grow while still keeping our bars affordable.

Do your bars contain preservatives?
No, our bars do not have preservatives added - as they don't contain liquid they are unlikely to go 'off' however we do recommend that you don't leave them lying in a puddle of water. This will encourage bacterial growth and make the bar disintegrate faster.

The best thing to do is pat it dry with a towel when you are done and pop it on a shelf of slatted soap dish to stay dry until the next use.

Will you be adding more bars?
We do plan on expanding the range in the future, our next product to launch will be a conditioning bar.

I don't like my bar....
We are sorry to hear this. As a small business we take customer satisfaction very seriously. We are constantly looking at ways we can improve our formulations without sacrificing quality and doggy skin friendliness. All feedback is taken on board so just get in touch and we will sort things out.

I have another question...
